The Final Design Phase of the Atlantic City Expressway (ACE) Third Lane Widening Project was initiated in January 2025. Site investigations consisting of soil borings and test pits were conducted throughout the project limits in Summer 2025 to confirm existing underground utilities and soil conditions. The Design Team is actively coordinating with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). New Jersey Pinelands Commission, and local utility stakeholders as the contract documents are being refined throughout the Final Design Phase.

The project is currently being divided into three construction packages. The limits of Contract No. 1 include the widening and associated improvements from the western terminus at Interchange 44 to Interchange 41. Contract No. 2 improvements range from Interchange 41 to Interchange 31 along the Eastbound roadway. Contract No. 3 improvements range from Interchange 41 to Interchange 31 along the Westbound roadway.

In advance of the larger widening improvement contracts, SJTA will be constructing safety and operational improvements that include widening the Sicklerville Road Ramp at Interchange 7 and performing isolated shoulder repairs throughout the Eastbound and Westbound roadways. This construction is anticipated to start in Fall 2026 after the summer peak congestion period.
